HOME FROM HOSPITAL:

After 8 days in hospital John came home last Friday after serious open heart surgery to replace a heart valve.  He now has two mechanical valves pumping away in his chest and is feeling much better than he has for over 12 months.

Amazing staff at The Austin Hospital in Melbourne.  Everyone looked after him so well and the intensive care nurses, well what can I say but to thank them for their care.

Quite a scar but it'll heal and John will be as good as new.

INCY-WINCY SPIDER

Hello, this is my first Blog.......until a few months ago, I'd never even heard the term so this is all very new to me. It's still very summery here in Victoria, Australia where I live even though the calender tells us it's now autumn. Last night, this is what we had on the wall of our house, a large huntsman spider - thank goodness it decided not to make it's way indoors or the family would have left in a real hurry. The Commonwealth Games finishes on the weekend but it's been a great time for Melbourne with lots going on in and around the city. As a Scot by birth, it was great to see the Scottish team in their kilts and even better to see them winning so many medals.

TOTTIE SCONES

I thought I'd treat the family today so I made them some Scottish Tottie Scones (Potato Scones) and they turned out great. This is an old photo but lets you see how they look. Tottie scones are made with mashed potato and you eat them with bacon and eggs and maybe black pudding....if you don't know what black pudding is, then I won't go into detail. You can look that up for yourself. How to make Tottie Scones: No real measurements here as it's a sort of play it by ear recipe and I have tried it with instant mashed potato and it worked well. Put any leftover mashed potato in the fridge to cool then put into a bowl along with a couple of handfulls of flour. Work through with fingers until it resembles a crumb mixture - add more flour as required. Once you have the mixture nice and crumbly, add a small amount of milk and work it through...keep adding milk a little at a time until the mixture becomes a dough.
